Top Parts For 1971 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet

About This Cabriolet's Top

Karmann Ghias are called "Cabriolets" and not just a "convertible" because their tops have headliners and padding and provide an experience much closer to being in a "closed" car. Therefore, their tops are sophisticated and have a fair number of pieces. This web page documents the pieces for our '71 KG Cabriolet.

Frankly, we never wanted this car and are tired of putting more money in it, so we're hoping someone buys the car off of us before we get around to installing the top. However, we have everything on hand to do so and all the pictured parts (and likely more) come with the car.

We bought a full set of new top components from Convertible Specialties. Camile, and her daughter Camile helped us out and we got a special color combination that our customer said he wanted. The images here don't really do the fabrics justice regarding color. You'll note in the images that the colors of the same parts appear to differ in the various images, primarily due to lighting.

BELOW: On the left we have both right and left side "header plates" that have the chrome alignment pins attached. The aluminum strips hiding below most of the parts here are the stiffeners for the door glass to top seals - there are four of these, and they're sided, left right and top and rear. The two chrome things are the latch receivers. In the plastic bag are the cables for the side and rear window openings. Also hiding below are the top to windshield frame latches, one of which is visible on the right side. The rubber strip is the windshield seal - the windshield has been intentionally left out to make the installation of the top easier.

We have more parts, such as new replacements for the wooden bows, and will get photos of them here soon.
