Bumperss For 1971 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet

About This Cabriolet's Bumpers

Starting in 1970 a new type of bumper was fitted on the (type I based) Karmann Ghia (the type III Karmann Ghia has a completely different kind of bumper), which was only used for two model years - 1970 and 1971, and only on cars intended for export to the USA. (Yet another type of bumper was fitted for 1972 due to "three mile an hour bumper" regulation in the USA which, unfortunately, often had the effect of destroying the car to save the bumper...)

To be a little more accurate, only the rears changed, and this was to accommodate the new tail lamp and reflector.

Because these rear bumpers were only used for two years, the unique pieces for them are harder to find.

BELOW: Here we see our pile of parts before assembly, illustrated in four images. The alert will notice that there are some duplicates. It's our intention to fit the best parts we have available to this car and sometimes a choice hasn't been made yet. Or, a candidate part was found and just added to the pile, leaving a decision to be made later.

BELOW: Here we can see a bin filled with used bumper parts - the yellow ones came from this car originally. These parts are not in great condition and we chose better ones and have had them repainted. Please see one of the lower images on the main page for this car where these pieces can be seen drying, hanging from a painting rack shortly after having been painted.

We have more parts, such as new replacements for the wooden bows, and will get photos of them here soon.
